After over twenty years overseas, living to some, an idyllic expatriate existence and lifestyle mostly in tropical Bali, Indonesia, the pressure is building to return home. It was time to reconnect with what had always been a place of names and histories that I grew up with, but, in reality, knew very little about. Sydney, and especially the inner city, had been the place my ancestors from various backgrounds had migrated to by multiple means, coalescing and putting down roots. Initially, all arrived by sailing ship or steamship, direct to Port Jackson in Sydney or to Hobart in Tasmania. They all bred and internally migrated. Some went out to and came back from the country regions around NSW. Some had come via Tasmania and Melbourne. All ended up in Sydney. That is where my story starts and ends.
