The Rise & Fall of (personal) Empires - an historical fiction trilogy
Spanning two hemispheres and eight countries across the gritty backdrop of the 1970s and 80s, this commercial historical drama follows Miko, a traumatised Australian teenager, as his desperate quest for identity collides with the tragic world of Vietnam’s last exiled ruler, Emperor Bao Dai. As Miko descends into a perilous international underworld of war, exploitation, and inescapable fate, his journey blurs the line between meticulously researched history and psychological fiction. Ultimately, the narrative folds in on itself when the author-narrator, James Slade, is forced to step out of the shadows and rise as the trilogy’s final protagonist.
All three books contain information that will be considered confrontational and controversial. It will be challenged as to whether it’s fact or fiction. There may be a fourth book coming, most likely called ‘With or Without You’.
